  Coming In second place in the ” Fantastyki” competition, Jan Maszczyszyn’s work is surprisingly mature, dynamic and highly original. The competetion was the first debut of the winner Marek Huberata / Marek S. Huberat, and third place also debuted a story by Andrzej Sapkowski / Andrzej Sapkowski. Ian Maschishin / Jan Maszczyszyn (b. 1960) – Polish writer of science fiction. He made his debut in 1977 in the journal «Nowy Wyraz» story «Strażnik / guard , which later appeared in the anthology of young writers «Spotkanie w przestworach – 1″ (1982, but has been prepared for publication as early as 1979-80).
  To publish their texts in many fanzines («Somnambul», «Fikcje»,
   «Kwazar», «Feniks», «Spektrum»),
   magazines and newspapers «Politechnik», «Fakty», «Merkuriusz», «Odgłosy», anthologies «Pożeracz szarości», «Sposób na Wszechświat», «Dira necessitas».
   He was one of the founders of the club of fans of fantasy «Somnambul». In 1989, he emigrated to Australia, where he lives today. In recent years (from about 2011) he returned to writing fiction, showing a truly fantastic activity – his stories can be found on the set of the Polish network resource: “Niedobre literki”, “Fantastyka Polska”, “Szortal”, “Ex Fabula”, ” Herbata u Heleny “,” Carpenoctem “,” Nowa Fantastyka “,” QFant “,” Bumerang Polski “,” Sadurski “,” Horrorline “,” Polska groza “et al., and produced some of their anthologies.
   In 2013 he published a collection of 19 new stories «Testimonium / Testimonee” , in 2015 – the novel «Światy Solarne / Solar worlds” .
   Recently positioned as “the first Polish steampunk”, Swiaty Solarne/ Solar Worlds consists of several novels that soon are soon going to be presented to Polish Science Fiction readers. Below are illustrations for the novel.
In the near furture, Jan plans to write more stories, here is a sneak peak of one of his newest book covers designed by his daughter Natalie Maschishin-O’Kif / Natalie Maszczyszyn-O’Keffee.

8. В блоке польской фантастики один рассказ – «Ciernie/Тернии». Его написал Ян Maщишин/Jan Maszczyszyn, и это одна из конкурсных работ. В некоем неопределенном будущем от человечества осталось едва несколько кланов, чьи крайне одряхлевшие члены почти все свое время проводят, путешествуя по линиям жизни предков. И однажды натыкаются на жуткого врага… Цветные иллюстрации ЕЖИ КУРЧАКА/Jerzy Kurczak и МАРИУША КШИВИЦКОГО/Mariusz Krzywicki.
На удивление зрелое, динамичное и весьма оригинальное в сюжетном решении произведение. Забегая вперед, скажу, что оно уступило в конкурсе «Фантастыки» первое место дебютному рассказу Марека Хуберата/Marek S. Huberat, но оттеснило на третье место дебютный рассказ Анджея Сапковского/Andrzej Sapkowski. Да-да, тот самый знаменитый «Wiedzmin/Ведьмак»…
Про Яна Мащишина наш ФАНТЛАБ хоть что-то да знает: лежат карточки на два рассказа («Терний» среди них нет). Ну ладно…
Ян Мащишин/Jan Maszczyszyn (род. 1960) – польский писатель научной фантастики. Дебютировал в 1977 году на страницах журнала «Nowy Wyraz» рассказом «Strażnik/Стражник, вошедшем позже в антологию молодых писателей «Spotkanie w przestworach — 1» (1982, но была подготовлена к печати еще в 1979-80).
Публиковал свои тексты во многих фэнзинах («Somnambul», «Fikcje»,
«Kwazar», «Feniks», «Spektrum»),
журналах и газетах «Politechnik», «Fakty», «Merkuriusz», «Odgłosy», антологиях «Pożeracz szarości», «Sposób na Wszechświat», «Dira necessitas».
Был одним из основателей клуба любителей фантастики «Somnambul». В 1989 году эмигрировал в Австралию, где живет и поныне. В последнее время (примерно с 2011 года) вернулся к написанию фантастических произведений, проявляя воистину фантастическую активность – его рассказы можно найти на множестве польских сетевых ресурсов: “Niedobre literki”, “Fantastyka Polska”, “Szortal”, “Ex Fabula”, “Herbata u Heleny”, “Carpenoctem”, “Nowa Fantastyka”, “QFant”, “Bumerang Polski”, “Sadurski”, “Horrorline”, “Polska groza” и др. и в выпускаемых некоторыми из них антологиях.
В 2013 году опубликовал сборник из 19-ти новых рассказов «Testimonium/Тестимоний», в 2015 – роман «Światy Solarne/Солярные миры».
Последний позиционируется как «первый польский стимпанк» и, по заверению автора, открывает цикл из нескольких романов, которые он собирается вскоре представить польскому читателю. Вот тут репродуцированы несколько иллюстраций к роману.
В ближайших планах Яна Мащишина числятся и некоторые другие фантастические произведения. Вот обложка к одному из них, которую спроектировала его дочь Натали Мащишин-O’Kиф/Natalie Maszczyszyn-O’Keef.

Laboratoria Fantastiki, or FantLab (Russian: Лаборатория фантастики, “speculative fiction laboratory”), is a Russian website dedicated to science fiction and fantasy literature. It was founded in 2004 by Alexei Lvov.
Content
The website contains an extensive user-populated database of books, annotations, and reviews. Unregistered users have access to author pages, ratings, news and awards. If users sign up, they can review and rate books, generate reading lists. They can also create their own bookshelves and publish articles. In June 2013, the site had over 88,000 members and over 244,000 works by authors had been added. In April, 2012, the 2000th author (Murray Leinster) was added to the database.
Fantlab calls its mission:
- To compile bibliographies for any author writing in Science Fiction or Fantasy genres, complete with maximum information about the author, and his or hers biography, including awards and nominations.
- Fair rating for books and authors based on reader votes and book reviews.
- Recommended titles list, based on individual profiling.
- Classification system for books and titles.
- Publishers plans, rumors and gossip.
- Special awards and recognition
- Personal Articles published by Authors
- User forums where literature related interests can be discussed
- FantLab is not an electronic library, that’s why the texts of literary works can not be downloaded.
The FantLab’s book of the year award (Russian: Книга года по версии Фантлаба) are a set of awards given annually for the best science fiction or fantasy works published inRussia during previous year. The awards are named after FantLab, the founding fanzine called “Laboratory of SF & Fantasy” hosted at FantLab.ru web site. It is organized and overseen by society of reader’s registered at FantLab site, the awards are given each year. They were first given in 2007, and have been awarded every year since. Over the years that the award has been given, the categories presented have changed; currently FantLab Awards are given in 9 categories, and include works published on websites.
